Kolkata Knight Riders 163-4 (Kallis 53) beat
Deccan Chargers 154-8 (Abdulla 3-24) by 9 runs
Indian Premier League 2011, Kolkata
Jacques Kallis hit a half-century and then held four catches as the Kolkata Knight Riders delighted their home fans at Eden Gardens with a nine-run win over the Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League 2011.
Kallis stroked 53 in 45 balls as the Knight Riders bounced back from their opening day defeat at the hands of the Chennai Super Kings to post 163 for four and the Chargers lost wickets regularly before they were held to 154 for eight in reply.
For Kallis, it was his second half-century of the tournament having also batted well against the Super Kings and here he hit seven fours and one six as well as some particularly classy off-side shots.
Leg-spinner Amit Mishra struck twice to dismiss Manvinder Bisla (19) and Gautam Gambhir (29) and after Kallis fell to compatriot JP Duminy, Manoj Tiwary blasted 30 in 21 balls and Yusuf Pathan 22 in 15 to guide Kolkata to a score that always looked beyond the Chargers.
Ishank Jaggi (3) was bowled by Iqbal Abdulla before a superb piece of fielding from Eoin Morgan ran out Shikhar Dhawan for seven as the rot set in.
Captain Kumar Sangakkara offered Kallis his first catch when he had made 16 and the man with the orange cap, awarded to the leading run-scorer, went on to take the catches to dismiss Bharat Chipli, who top scored with an enterprising 48 in 40 balls, Duminy (6) and finally Dwaraka Ravi Teja (15) as the Chargers' hopes subsided.
It could have been much worse for them had the Knight Riders not shelled a couple of other chances - showing as they did in the opener that there is still room for improvement.
Abdulla returned three for 24 while Jaydev Unadkat and Rajat Bhatia both took two wickets.
