South Africa have rested all-rounder Jacques Kallis and included Dean Elgar in their 15-man squad for the five-match One-Day International series against England which begins in Cardiff on 24th August.
Kallis was recently named in South Africa’s 30-man preliminary squad for September’s ICC World Twenty20 so is likely to be added to the squad for the three Twenty20 Internationals which immediately follow the conclusion of the ODI series. Meanwhile, Elgar is in line for a possible international debut after being previously prevented from doing so by a knee injury that he picked up before the Proteas series against Sri Lanka.
CSA Selector Andrew Hudson said of Elgar’s inclusion, “Dean has been in our plans for some time and might well have made his debut last year but for injury."
Other notable inclusions in the squad are leg-spinner Imran Tahir – who last played an ODI in 2011 – and Ryan McLaren – who made the last of his 10 appearances in 2010. Wayne Parnell has been included despite the cloud of drug allegations hanging over him following his arrest in a Mumbai nightclub in May.
Hudson said of their inclusions: "Imran is a genuine wicket-taking bowler and his selection enables us to explore our options in this area. Ryan has just come off some exceptional form for the South Africa A side and the added depth he provides in the seam bowling department will allow us to rotate players if we feel the need arises."
South Africa squad: AB de Villiers (captain, wicket-keeper), Hashim Amla (vice-captain), JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Imran Tahir, Ryan McLaren, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
