New Zealand's Kane Williamson has been suspended from bowling in international cricket after independent analysis showed he uses an illegal bowling action for most of his deliveries.

He was reported following the second Test against the West Indies in Trinidad last month and underwent analysis in Cardiff.

"The analysis revealed that most of his deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations," a statement from the ICC confirmed.

"Williamson, who was reported after the Test match against the West Indies in Trinidad last month, can apply for re-assessment after he has modified his bowling action in accordance with clause 2.4 of the Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions."

Williamson, a specialist batsman who has scored 2,377 Test runs with seven centuries, has taken 50 wickets in all three formats of international cricket.
