South African all-rounder Francois du Plessis will not be returning to Old Trafford to play for Lancashire in the 2010 season after it was confirmed that the club had lost their appeal over his immigration status.
A change to immigration criteria has resulted in a number of players being ruled as ineligible and despite what the club calls 'months of concerted effort', du Plessis has joined that group.
Northamptonshire pair Riki Wessels and Johannes van der Wath have also been prevented from playing in 2010.
“This is a very disappointing outcome for not only Faf but the County," Director of Cricket Mike Watkinson said. "Faf has been an important part of our professional squad since his arrival and was certainly part of our plans going forward.
“We accept the change in the immigration criteria and support the long term objectives associated with this decision. However, it’s a shame that certain players of quality who have demonstrated genuine commitment to English cricket and add something to our game will be lost to county cricket. His contributions both as a player and clubman will by be missed by all associated with Lancashire and we wish him well with his cricketing career.”
