Lancashire Sign Sanath Jayasuriya
Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya will join Lancashire County Cricket Club on a short term contract from 19 June, 2007. This signing is to cover for the absence of Muttiah Muralitharan, who will be involved in a three match Test Series against Bangladesh.
Jayasuriya will play in Lancashire Lightning’s Twenty20 Cup Group matches and will be available to play for Lancashire until Muralitharan returns from International duty on the 20th July.
One of the world's most uncompromising strikers of the ball, Jayasuriya is also an extremely effective and canny left-arm spinner; which will help Lancashire’s quest for Twenty20 success this year.
Sanath Jayasuriya has had previous County experience at Somerset in 2005 and recently retired from International Cricket following the ICC World Cup, where Sri Lanka lost to Australia in the Final.
Speaking from Colombo, Sanath says, “I’m extremely happy to have been called by Lancashire County Cricket Club to participate in the forthcoming season. It is a privilege to be associated with Lancashire after having played almost two decades of cricket all around the world and I look forward very much to be playing for Lancashire County Cricket Club.”
Lancashire Cricket Manager Mike Watkinson said, “Sanath and Twenty20 Cricket is an exciting prospect. He has a tremendous record in One Day cricket and we are delighted he will be joining us.”
Lancashire’s first Twenty20 match is against Durham Dynamos at Old Trafford on Friday 22nd June starting at 5:30pm. Tickets are still available at www.lccc.co.uk
