Earlier this month, a team of 50 students from Leigh Academy in Bexley served up a gourmet three-course lunch to 350 guests at Bexley Cricket Club.

The guests were attending a Lashings All Stars v Leigh Academy celebrity cricket match and were treated to the following menu:

  • Starter: smoked salmon roulade
  • Main course: roasted chicken breast with chorizo, butter bean estofado with garlic and thyme
  • Dessert: individual apple tarts with beignet soufflé and warm chocolate sauce

The students worked with a six-man team of chefs from Cucina, the academy's catering firm.

Cucina operations manager Tony Ridgwell was delighted with how well the day went.

"This is the third year we have done the catering for this event," he said.

"As well as the food, we've had some lovely comments from the guests about how friendly and efficient the service was."

On the field, the Lashings team, bolstered by high-profile cricketers including Herschelle Gibbs, Saqlain Mushtaq, Devon Malcolm, Phil DeFreitas, Corey Collymore and John Emburey, ran out 47-run winners.

But even their team were impressed with the food being served up.

"The food was very good indeed, and well received by all. And the Year 10 students from Leigh Academy did a fantastic job serving the food," Lashings event manager James Honey-Green said.

"Getting them involved was a wonderful initiative and I would love to see this at many more of our events."
