The new cricket practice facility at West Thames College

ECB code of practice non-turf pitch installer total-play Ltd is busy working with a number of the UK's biggest sports turf contractors on high profile projects across the country, as well at undertaking projects as lead contractor.

At Stanley Park High School in Surrey, total-play was appointed by White Horse Contractors to install a new cricket practice facility as part of an extensive project, led by BAM construction, to build new sports facilities that also include a new synthetic athletics track, artificial turf pitch and Multi Use Games Area among others. The total-play team constructed a new 27m, four lane open-ended non-turf practice system; installing the primary stone sub-base, carpets, steelwork and netting. The works had to be carried out within a specific deadline to ensure the new facilities could be fully handed over to the client within the agreed timescales.

Also on behalf of White Horse Contractors, as part of a multi-million pound redevelopment project at Isleworth’s West Thames College led by Osbourne Construction, total-play was initially asked to construct a 2-lane practice system with non-turf batting and bowling ends.  However, after detailed consultation with the clients, it was decided that a fully carpeted system would be more effective - both in terms of appearance and performance. As the project had a strict budget total-play proposed the use of its TP5 tufted carpet to upgrade the briefed system’s specification. This provided a high performing, yet more cost effective option, that the TP1 wilton woven surface total-play uses in the construction of its ECB approved TP365 option, and the system is standing up well to regular use by over 600 pupils. Meanwhile, at a village cricket club near Sailsbury, MJ Abbot appointed total-play to construct the primary layer and carpets to a new non-turf match pitch.

With these projects complete the total-play team is currently working, on behalf of Mansell Construction, on a two lane non-turf practice facility at the new Nobel School in Stevenage. Works include the installation of carpets, shockpads, steelwork and netting.

On the horizon is a very high profile contractor-led project at the prestigious City of London Freemen’s School. Here, total-play is about to embark on the construction of a five lane none-turf cricket practice facility on behalf of Spade Oak Contractors who, in turn, have been appointed by Morgan Sindall. Works, due to start in September, are part of a large scheme that includes the extension of the existing artificial training pitch to include a warm-up area for hockey, resurfacing some neighbouring macadam tennis courts, improving the access road and a number of other large-scale developments across the school.

Finally, following the successful completion of the Stanley Park High School job, White Horse Contractors has appointed total-play to construct a two lane practice facility and new match pitch as Kingswood College in Hull, with work due to start in October.

Cricket playing surface specialist total-play Ltd has noticed a marked rise in the number of non-turf match pitches it has been commissioned to design and install. When Saltwood CC was approached by Hythe Green CC to host its league matches for the 2013 season, the committee was happy to help out another club. However, with two home matches scheduled at the ground every weekend the club now has two wickets to protect. Having purchased a total-play Ltd developed Climate Cover System last year, this tried and tested solution was the natural choice

The synthetic pitch system, available to cricket clubs, schools, colleges and universities for either match play or practice, only received approval by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in December of 2012, yet Dura-Sport has just installed their 25th non-turf cricket project of the year...
Headland Amenity's Multigreen fertiliser range has brought about a dramatic change on the hardworking playing fields of an Oxfordshire school. When Rob Eason took over as Head of Grounds at Dragon School, a co-educational private school for 8 -13 year olds, the turf on the sportsfield was struggling.
