Leicestershire captain Matthew Hoggard is a man who loves his dogs and may well have become a vet had an outstanding career in cricket not developed.

So, imagine Hoggy’s delight at being able to open the inaugural regional German Shepherd Dog League of Great Britain show in Markfield this Sunday (APRIL 25).

Hoggard, who enjoys nothing more than to walk his dogs Billie, a doberman, Walter, a mixed breed and Molly, a border collie, will open the 12 class regional event, hosted by Leicestershire Schutzhund Club, at the Jubilee Playing Fields at 9am.

Grounds will open at 8am and judging of the historic event, which is sponsored by Arden Grange, starts at 9am.

It is bound to be a fantastic day and Hoggy, who has spent many a happy hour walking his beloved dogs over the years, is excited to be a part of it.

Hoggard said: “My dogs provide me with fantastic company so I am delighted to be able to open the GSD show.

“I have visited the Leicestershire Schutzhund Club and their facilities are fantastic. They do excellent work and it would be great to see lots of people there – so come along and join in the fun!

“I look forward to opening the show before leading the team in our big Clydesdale Bank 40-over opening match against Nottinghamshire at Grace Road. It will be an action-packed day.”

Steven Havers, who is Head Trainer of Havers Specialised Dog Training – formerly K9 consultants – has more than 20 years experience in dog handling.

He trains dogs at the Markfield base, the home of Leicestershire Schutzhund Club, and is delighted that Hoggy will be opening the show.

Steven said: “The show has generated huge interest in the German shepherd dog community but I wanted to widen the appeal.

“Our venue, Jubilee Playing Fields, hosts excellent cricket and football teams and is a superb community sporting venue.

“I am delighted Matthew agreed to open the show which can only help raise the profile and hopefully encourage the local community to make use of the facilities on offer. It will be an action packed day.”

In the show, the judging classes are in the following categories: Junior, Yearling, Adult and Working classes and Minor Puppy and Puppy Classes

Special trophies will be awarded for individual Class Regional Sieger/Regional Siegerin. There are also SV Grading Cards in Junior, Yearling, Open & Working Classes and rosettes for Junior Handling.

Show Catalogues are available at a prepaid price of £2.50 (or £3.50 on the day).

The GSD League Council would also welcome sponsorship for this event. Class Sponsors will have a strapline advert at the head of the class listing.

Sponsors will also be given full credit in the catalogue and on the GSD League website after the event.
