Northern Universities Student Club Community Cricketers Elite were joined by local cricketing hero Phil Mustard as their preparations for the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Tri Nations Championships took a major step forward.

Phil born and bred in Sunderland has already represented England 12 times and Durham County 243 times with a strike rate touching the high 90s is regarded as this countries finest attacking wicket keeper left hand batsman.  Phil, who gave up his evening off between Twenty20 matches for Durham took the clubs talented wicket keepers Christopher Youldon and Daniel Hodgson through their paces showing them the tricks of the trade he uses.

Phil’s session was part of a revolutionary “Ronny Boyd Training Camp” programme created thanks to the backing of Elite Coach Ronny Boyd, Go North East, Hilton Newcastle Gateshead and Ashbrooke Sports Club.

John D Holland, Director of Cricket was absolutely delighted to have secured Phil Mustard’s services.  “Phil is a local hero who has thrilled cricket fans around the world with his attacking style.  You could see the confidence growing in the students in particular the young Sunderland CC keeper Christopher Youldon that his hero was willing to come down and spend two hours working with him”

Mr Holland also made a special reference to the efforts of Ashbrooke to make Phil feel welcome on his return to Sunderland.  “Having the Chairman of Trustees come specially to present Phil with a gift from the club, Paul Breeze and his catering team cook him a special meal just goes to show everyone why we are proud to work with Ashbrooke Sports Club”

The training programme continues next week at Ashbrooke and whoever joins Ronny has a major task of not only replacing a local hero but one who now has an even greater fan club

In a stunning upset the NUSC cricketers regained the much coveted Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Cricket Championship trophy with a 2 matches to 0 scoreline over their Irish counterparts from Leinster . Unseasonable weather ensured just two of the four scheduled matches were played although this allowed for a rare opportunity for sightseeing, indoor training at Durham CCCs ground and for a training session with the Durham CCC 1st X1 squad prior to their match with Lancashire Lightning in the Twenty20 Cup.

Northern Universities Student Club-Community Cricketers Elite (NUSC) sponsored by Hilton Newcastle Gateshead completed the final session of 2010 of their Winter Training Programme (WTP 2011) on Saturday. After the snow of the previous two weeks, the students were met by the welcome surprise of sunshine and warm conditions which certainly helped to improve their mood. It might have been the final session but that simply meant work, more work and hard work faced the players as weather delays meant two weeks work went into one.
