Hampshire Cricket is delighted at the announcement that Michael Lumb has been selected for England’s Twenty20 World Cup squad.

The belligerent Royals opener was named in England’s final 15-man squad heading to the West Indies for the third World Twenty20, to begin on 30 April.

Lumb was in dazzling Twenty20 form in 2009, scoring 442 runs in 11 matches for Hampshire, including a blistering 124 not out from 69 balls against Essex. During five innings at this year’s IPL, Lumb has scored 126 runs at a strike rate of almost 130. His powerful top order hitting has helped the Rajasthan Royals to four straight victories and to third place in the current standings.

Lumb impressed the England management in February when he made 58 not out for England Lions against the full England team during the tour of United Arab Emirates, hitting 14 runs to win from the final over. He then struck a match-winning 110 for the Lions against Pakistan A, his powerful strokeplay and heavy run scoring further enhancing an  already burgeoning reputation.

Hampshire Cricket Chairman, Rod Bransgrove said:

“This is fantastic news for Michael and fully deserved. He showed in last year’s domestic Twenty20 tournament what a destructive batsman he can be and anyone who witnessed his incredible 124 not out in the Twenty20 match against Essex at The Rose Bowl last year will testify to that. I wish him all the best in the tournament and I’m sure he will make all of us at Hampshire very proud.”

Sean Morris, Chief Executive of the Rajasthan Royals (Lumb’s team in the IPL and Hampshire’s sister team from the Royals2020 super-franchise) said:

“Rajasthan Royals are delighted by Michael Lumb’s call-up to the England T20 squad. He has proved to be a valuable and popular member of our team in a short space of time where he has adapted very quickly to the challenges of IPL and the broad culture of our side.

“His growing reputation in India, and the confidence he has gained from his experience with the Royals will be great preparation for international cricket. We wish him all the very best for what we are sure will be an exciting and successful international career.”

England national selector Geoff Miller said:

“Michael Lumb has consistently performed well in limited-overs cricket for Hampshire and has also impressed during his time in the IPL and with the England Lions.

“As a powerful left-hander Michael adds aggression to our batting and has the ability to compliment the rest of the line-up.”
