Mather & Co Bowled Over By New Museum Contract Win
Leading attraction and museum design consultancy Mather & Co has won the contract to create the first ever purpose built museum outside London at an English county cricket club.
Fans of Yorkshire County Cricket Club will soon be able to marvel in the Club’s rich and lengthy history which will be displayed in the state-of-the-art interactive attraction.
The museum, which is set to open to the public summer 2010 and will be housed in the East Stand at Headingley, will boast an array of interactives and an audio visual theatre to ensure the attraction has lasting appeal, reinforcing the enriched history of the Club. Among the exhibits will be the first minute and score books which have been restored and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
David Hall, Chairman of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club Archive Committee, said: “For some time there has been a desire to create a purpose built museum to celebrate the long and rich history of our great Club. After viewing many of their museum designs we invited Mather & Co to pitch. Mather & Co presented an impressive range of concepts to interpret Yorkshire Cricket’s decorated history and demonstrated their ability to balance new technologies with historical artefacts which will appeal to a wide audience for many years to come.”
In addition to taking visitors through Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s decorated heritage, the space will be used for conferencing and hospitality, allowing the Club to create further revenue streams.
Chris Mather, managing director of Mather & Co, said: “Yorkshire County Cricket Club has demonstrated its pioneering vision to create an attraction to celebrate its history and is the first Club in English Cricket to do so; we are delighted to be on board.”
The contract adds to an impressive portfolio of award-winning sporting museum attractions for the company including the Wembley National Stadium visitor guided tour, the Arsenal Football Club Museum and Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum.
Mather & Co has also recently completed a concept study for a brand new state of the art audio visual show for the Tennis Hall of Fame, an internationally acclaimed venue in Newport Rhode Island, USA. More information on this new project will be announced shortly.
