Lord's Cricket Ground has recently played host to a special 'Sport Relief Antiques Roadshow' to be broadcast on BBC1 at 6.30pm on Sunday 16th March.
The Roadshow team, which includes some of Britain's leading antiques and fine arts specialists , last visited Lord's with Hugh Scully as host in March 1997, but this is the first time the show has been given access to Lord's Pavilion.
MCC made available to the BBC the famous Long Room and MCC Museum so sports fans and sporting heroes could bring their memorabilia to Lord's for this special edition of the show, which also marks Michael Aspel's final recording as host of this TV institution which he describes as, "a history lesson, detective story and game show".
On the day more than 1,300 people visited Lord's, bringing with them a wide range of sporting artefacts and memorabilia including one of the stopwatches used to time Roger Bannister's four minute mile and a painting showing the earliest recorded game of football and a medal thrown in to the crowd by Jose Mourinho. Among the famous sporting faces to appear were Graham Gooch, Tessa Sanderson and Murray Walker.
Adam Chadwick, MCC Curator said, "The hundreds of visitors to Lord's for this special Antiques Roadshow showed that the public share the same passion as MCC for sporting history. Amongst the paintings and memorabilia of the oldest sporting collection in the world, everyone had the chance to see some prize possessions from all around the country. This particular day reflects not only the surprise and fascination of our usual visitors to Lord's but also the ground's historic role as a venue for a wide range of sporting events and entertainments. I am sure it will make great viewing for the Sport Relief weekend."
