Middlesex 179-8 (McCullum 88) beat
Kent 163-8 (Northeast 59) by 16 runs
South Group, Natwest T20 Blast, Richmond
Brendon McCullum scored a blistering 88 as Middlesex completed a 16 run victory over Kent in their South Group encounter of the Natwest T20 Blast in Richmond on Thursday.
Chasing a total of 180, Kent lost both their openers Daniel Bell-Drummond (1) and Joe Denly (1) early with just two runs on the board.
With Sam Billings (9) too failing to contribute, Kent had an uphill task but skipper Sam Northeast (59) and James Neesham (52) helped them bounce back after adding 75 runs for the fourth wicket that came off just 54 deliveries.
Both batsmen fell after reaching their half century while Alex Blake (27) played a 14-ball cameo but could not quite manage to take Kent over the line as they were dismissed for 163 in the final ball of the innings.
Steven Finn (2-26) and Ryan Higgins (2-22) were the pick of the Middlesex bowlers as they rise to fifth position in the table.
Earlier it was McCullum (88), who announced his arrival in the tournament with a 51-ball splendid innings that had nine boundaries and six maximums.
Even though, Dawid Malan (33) and Eoin Morgan (28) played useful innings, it was McCullum's brilliance at the crease that powered Middlesex to 179 for eight in the 20 overs despite a four wicket haul from Matt Coles (4-32).
