The row over media coverage of the opening Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Brisbane took a new turn earlier today with Cricket Australia issuing a statement to retract comments made about News Limited.

The statement read, "Cricket Australia today made comment about News Limited during an interview with ABC Radio which it retracts, acknowledges is untrue and for which it apologises.

"During the interview, CA Spokesperson Peter Young said discussions about News Limited's media access to international cricket matches was based on commercial considerations important to cricket and to the media, and said News Limited's proposals would transfer money available for community cricket to News Limited.

"CA Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said CA acknowledged that News Limited's concern in current venue access discussions relates solely to its traditional role of freely reporting news, including cricket."

Major news agencies are boycotting the Test in protest of Cricket Australia's restrictions of coverage.
