Australian batsman Lisa Sthalekar has been chosen as the Cricket World ® Player Of The Week following a number of excellent batting performances during Australia’s successful Women’s Quadrangular tournament campaign in India.
She made a good start to the tournament, although her innings of 65 against New Zealand in the first match wasn’t enough to secure victory.
In the next match, she again starred in a losing cause hitting an unbeaten 87 against India as Australia lost by 3 wickets. The third match finally saw her efforts rewarded with victory over England; she had scored 85 runs off of 84 balls as Australia registered their first victory at the third attempt.
As Australia’s form began to mirror that of their star batsman, Sthalekar was again in the runs as they beat New Zealand by successfully defending 232 – her contribution had been a useful 35 in a low-scoring match.
With Australia still needing results to guarantee their place in the final, they were then set a stiff target of 269 to beat England. Thanks to Sthalekar’s knock of 77, they achieved the target with 4 overs to spare.
Australia went on to win their final group game against New Zealand to guarantee their place in the final, which they won comfortably with Sthalekar scoring 32 not out to guide them home.
Commenting on the award, cricketworld.com editor Nick Gear said, “Lisa has been consistently the best player of the tournament, and is a deserved winner of the award.”
The Cricket World ® Player Of The Week is judged by the www.cricketworld.com Editorial Team, which takes into consideration matches played in the preceding week with the final decision made on Monday morning.
