Middlesex Clinch Double Swoop

Middlesex have clinched a double signing to strengthen their squad with the 2008 just a few days away.

South African all-rounder Vernon Philander and Australian bowler Dirk Nannes will join up with the squad as soon as possible. Signings had to be made after Friedel de Wet and Ashley Noffke could not fulfil their county commitments.

Philander, 22, who plays his cricket for the Nashua Cape Cobras back home in South Africa, has signed until Indian spinner Murali Karthik joins up with the squad in June. He is a powerful middle order batsman and has experience on the international stage already.

Pace bowler Nannes, from Victoria, will play as a Kolpak on a Dutch passport and will provide quality to the bowling attack after the losses of Richard Johnson, Chris Whelan, Chad Keegan and Chris Wright to the Middlesex line up.

The London side kick off their season with a friendly against Oxford UCCE on April the 12th and then will travel to Grace Road and face Leicestershire in the County Championship on April the 16th
