Trafford Borough Council has approved the planning application for the first phase of an extensive £200 million development programme that promises huge economic, sporting and educational benefits for the North West.
Phase one is the creation of a new conference, event and banqueting facility at Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC), creating a venue that will attract major conferences and business to the area.
Property consultancy Drivers Jonas LLP (DJ) acted as planning advisors for the submission. Phillip Grant, Associate from DJ’s planning team, said: “These plans represent the first crucial step in launching a wider redevelopment package for the ground and surrounding area, that will deliver enormous benefit to the wider community. This will allow the Club to start work on redeveloping the ground so that LCCC can bring International Test Cricket back to Manchester as quickly as possible.”
This first stage of the development will cost £12 million and will result in a venue capable of hosting dinners for anything up to 1000 guests and able to cater for conferences ranging between 100 to over 1000 delegates. These facilities will provide a welcome alternative for conference & event organisers locally, nationally and also internationally.
Lancashire’s Commercial Director, Geoff Durbin said: “This new facility will simply be the best of its kind – Manchester has been crying out for a 1000+ capacity events building for many years so it is good news for us, for Trafford and the wider region.”
Designed by architects BDP, the new suite will be a self-contained facility overlooking the cricket pitch at the Old Trafford cricket stadium whose primary function will be for major conferences, events and weddings.
Throughout the development it will remain business as usual for LCCC. To ensure continuity for their clients and staff the management team have erected a solid walled marquee on the LCCC premises that can cater for 700+ guests for dinners and large conferences. Since being in place from the beginning of December 2008 the marquee, which benefits from a fully star-clothed high ceiling, has already been a popular setting for a number of company Christmas parties and is attracting enquiries from organisers for a varied range of events including weddings, conferences, product launches and exhibitions.
Geoff adds: “We have an excellent reputation for service at LCCC and a great team behind it. We were keen not to lose anyone, it was very important for us to retain the quality of staff and the marquee proved the perfect solution. It provides us with an excellent venue offering and, because there are no pillars, it’s a blank canvass for organisers to create their own unique events!”
The marquee will be a permanent fixture at LCCC until the new Suite is built and fully operational.
The new Suite is the first part of a £200 million development programme for the area. Work will commence in February 2009, and is due for completion in Summer 2010. The whole project will include the creation of new business, residential and leisure space in the vicinity and is set to bring huge economic, sporting and educational benefits to the community and the North West.
