Neston's Young Guns One Game Away From Televised Cricket Final

Neston’s youthful 1st XI cricket team is one victory away from appearing live on national TV.

The Cheshire Premier League side, nicknamed the Shrimpers, play Northern from the Liverpool Competition on Sunday (August 19) for the right to play on Sky Sports next month in the National Finals day of the ECB T20 competition at Edgbaston.

The Shrimpers, led by captain David Hurst, are hoping for a big crowd at their ground in Station Road, Parkgate, on Sunday afternoon. The game will start at 2pm and entrance is free with a bar and BBQ open throughout the match.

The side, which also includes 18-year-old Somerset fast bowler Ashley Davis, has had a fantastic journey to the quarter-final.

They won the Cheshire T20 competition beating Grappenhall and Hyde and were then victorious in the West Midlands area defeating a strong Tamworth side in last Sunday’s final.

Fielding first, the Shrimpers restricted Tamworth Tigers to 122-6 in 20 overs (Ashley Davis 2-18, Paul Stimson 2-10, Jordan Free 1-21) before the experienced Chris Hackett blasted an unbeaten 58 and David Hurst a patient 25 as Neston replied with 125-4 in 17.2 overs.

Team manager Don Hurst said: “We have had a remarkable journey to the quarter-final and to be just one win away from the televised finals day is incredible. We are hoping for a big crowd on Sunday to hopefully cheer the boys on to another famous victory.

“We have a young side with many of the players having come through Neston’s own junior section which we have worked hard to develop over the past ten years.”

The full regional finals draw is : Bristol v Wimbledon; Brentwood v Cuckney; Treeton v Chester le Street; Neston v Northern. The four winners will take part in the National Finals Day.
