20-year-old Essex fast bowler Mervyn Westfield has signed a new contract that will keep him at the Ford County Ground until the end of the 2010 season.
“Meryvn is a promising young cricketer," head coach Paul Grayson said. "His strong performances in the second XI in 2008 have led to us offering Meryvn an extension to his contract.
“We can see the potential there and Meryvn now has to stake his claim with the first XI. In Mervyn we have a promising young bowler. We look forward to seeing Meryvn breaking into the first team squad – as a maturing cricketer he has the ability to do this."
Westfield and his team-mates are already gearing up for the 2009 season.
“The players report back from the winter break tomorrow (7th January)," Grayson added. "Whilst there are still 6-8 players abroad we will be running winter workshops with a mixture of fitness sessions and indoor practice. Pre-season then starts in early March before we fly to Dubai on 14th March. Upon our return we will begin with outdoor net practice."
