Hyderabad's Indian Premier League franchise will be known as the Sun Risers from the 2013 season.

Hyderabad was previously represented by the Deccan Chargers before they were expelled earlier this year for failing to meet payment deadlines.

Sun TV won the bid to take over the franchise and although the option was available to base the new team in a number of other cities, the team is expected to remain in Hyderabad.

A press conference was held on 20th December to launch the franchise's new logo. At it, the Sun Risers logo was described as "an eagle soaring high, looking into the core of a rising sun, absorbing the colors of the bright star to become ‘one with the sun’. The new identity encapsulates the valor, chivalry, endurance, independence and fearlessness of the eagle synthesizing with energy and radiance obtained from sun."

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Mr. Shanmugam, CEO of Sun Risers said, “It is a moment of great pleasure for us to present the identity of the Hyderabad IPL team to all cricket enthusiasts across the world. Being in the business of media and entertainment, we are extremely happy to be a part of Cricket family to provide maximum entertainment to all cricket buffs.”

Speaking on the occasion, Coach Tom Moody said, “This is a proud moment for us as we unveil our new name and logo and we are sure that the team will be successful in the forthcoming season of IPL 2013. We are keenly looking forward to it and our game will stand testimony to the competition we will give to other teams.”

The new team already has its Twitter account set up, and can be found tweeting at @IPLsunrisers
