Durham have welcomed Graham Onions back into their matchday squad ahead of the LV= County Championship game against Yorkshire at Headingley Carnegie.

Onions is back in contention for a first-team place after undergoing surgery on a back injury that ruled him out of all cricket since May.

Durham have been forced into making changes after opener Mark Stoneman and fast bowler Steve Harmison picked up hand and arm injuries respectively in their season-opening draw at The Rose Bowl against Hampshire.

Former captain Will Smith has been brought in to replace Stoneman with Mitchell Claydon set to compete Onions for the final bowling spot.

"It’s a real shame to lose Mark and Stephen but these things happen in sport and we’re lucky enough to have depth to our squad which gives two other players the chance to come in and make an impact", head coach Geoff Cook explained.

"It’s great to welcome Graham back into the squad, he’s worked incredibly hard throughout his rehabilitation but it’s important that we time his return to the field in the LV= County Championship correctly.  There is a lot of four day cricket over the next two months and we need to make sure we bring him in at the right time."
