Glamorgan CCC have confirmed that South African batsman Alviro Petersen will not be returning to the club in 2012.

The 31 year-old had been the Dragons' overseas player and club captain in 2011, and it had been thought that he might return under a Kolpak arrangement for 2012 following the signing of Australian Marcus North as their overseas player.

However, this would have meant Petersen turning his back on playing Test cricket for South Africa; something he appears to have been unwilling to do following his successful recall to the Proteas Test side.

A statement on the club website read, "A signed agreement was reached with Alviro, and the club would have sought ECB clearance on his Kolpak status immediately upon his announcement to retire from international cricket.

"However, following his successful recall to the South African Test team, Alviro informed the club earlier this week that he had had a change of heart and has asked the club to release him from his commitment. Whilst the club was keen to retain his services, it understands the importance and honour of playing international cricket and has therefore reluctantly agreed to his request to be released from his Glamorgan commitments."

It went on, "The club will now carefully consider its options as it looks to finalise the make-up of its squad ahead of the 2012 season."

These options are thought to include the signing of a second overseas player for the Friends Life t20.

Overall Petersen scored 2039 runs in all first-team cricket for Glamorgan in 2011 and was named Players’ Player of the Year and the Championship Player of the Year at the county’s end of season awards.
