As Easter weekend approaches, we finally seem to have seen the back of the “Beast from the East” and the snow – so attention is now turning to the season with the first league game on April 21st, little over three weeks away. The last winter indoor nets are due to be held this coming Thursday, and this blog will hopefully show what’s been happening through the winter and our aims for the season.
November’s AGM saw Laeq Chishti re-elected as first team captain, with Richard James adding the role of Saturday team captain to the one he has performed over the last couple of years on a Sunday. Ollie Deakin takes over as third team captain, and with Rob Baker stepping down as fourth team captain, it looks likely that Ant Hartwell will take on this role for much of the season. Jack Pope becomes Sunday first team captain as we again will be fielding four senior teams on a Saturday and two on a Sunday.
A busy winter, with several players recruited at the time of writing. Atif Ali, Aqaab Ahmed and Waseem Shah all join and look likely to go into the first team squad. Jim and Sam Horobin arrive from C&R Hawks, Nathan Taylor from Rugeley and Steve Jenkinson from Milford. In addition, we have Callum Morrell (son of ex-Penkridge man Toby Morrell) arriving from Australia, and Jay Schofield who is playing league cricket for the first time. This should strengthen the club across all teams, giving us strength in depth throughout the season. We welcome them all, and hope they enjoy their seasons with us.
The first and second teams will again play in the Birmingham and District Premier League, with the thirds and fourths playing in the Staffs Clubs Cricket Championship. Our Sunday teams will both play in the Lichfield and District Sunday League. However, a major restructure for the 2019 season will see the Birmingham League reduced to just two divisions for first teams only – so, our second team will move back into a revamped Staffs Clubs Championship next season. They will be joined by our first team in the same competition unless they can finish in the top two and gain promotion from Division Two of the Birmingham League this season.
Lots of it! We will be running teams at age groups from under 9s through to under 19s, including an under 17s team for the first time. Registration night will be on Friday 20th April from 6pm to 8pm at the club, with the first training session starting the following Friday at 6:15pm. In addition, we will again be running All Stars Cricket for 5-8 year olds, starting at 5pm on Friday 11th May. The link to register for this is below:
Also, congratulations to Ross Parker who has been named in the Staffordshire County under 15s squad for the 2018 season.
Plenty to look forward to – both on and off the field. It promises to be one of the busiest in memory with all the senior and junior games, along with our ladies team who will be playing in the Staffordshire Cricket softball festivals. Social events already scheduled include a race night, live band, family fun day and a six-a-side competition which will also include a gin festival and our first team playing in their League / National T20 game against local rivals Fordhouses on 27th May.
From my point of view, I’m hoping to play regular second team cricket and contribute with both bat and gloves following our promotion last season as well as coaching our under 17s team.
