Rethink Your Warm Up To Improve Your Game
The methods of warming up are changing.
When my dad played, the warm up was a few catches on the outfield and stubbing out your fag before play (or during the first few overs in some cases). Then overseas pros came over with new-fangled ideas about jogging round the outfield.
Many clubs found even this innovation too much, and to this day staunchly maintain a Corinthian ideal of warming up by getting a young lad to give you some underarms: but only if you are an opener.
The more progressive teams have developed substantially in the last 10 years. The most read article ever on PitchVision Academy is this one about warming up. All ECB coaches are taught how to warm players up before matches and training sessions.
But, wherever you are now, you can improve the warm up with these tips:
- Warm up to play. Before getting out the bats and balls, it’s important to get your body ready to move. That means getting moving and stretching for a few minutes and ramping up the intensity as you go.
- Mobilise. Rather than touching your toes, get stretching the hips, ankles and upper back with some mobility drills. It will serve you better in the middle.
- Stabilise. Meanwhile, avoid stretching the lower back in favour of stabilising your core. You can do some simple timed planks to achieve this.
- Keep warm. One big error is to warm up well before the game then do nothing for hours while the team is batting. Don’t languish, keep yourself busy with something physical to keep the warm up going. Including bowling at tea.
- Finish with skills. A good warm up starts with basic stretches and finishes with you breaking out the skill work to remember how this fangled bat works anyway.
But the real take home point here is this:
Think about why you warm up, and thus will help you improve the session before play begins to get better results when the first real ball is bowled.
And whatever level you play, that’s important.
