Mitchell Starc has been ruled out of the second One-Day International against Sri Lanka on Sunday after complaining of soreness in his calf following yesterday’s win at the MCG. Starc took one for 25 from six overs in that match as Australia won by 107 runs to go one-nil up in the five-match series.
Cricket Australia Physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said: “Mitchell Starc had some mild right calf soreness after the match at the MCG last night. Whilst we are not majorly concerned about it, we have withdrawn him from the game on Sunday as a precaution. He will be reassessed over the next few days and is a possibility to play next weekend's Commonwealth Bank Series matches against Sri Lanka if his symptoms resolve”.
Starc has been replaced in the 13-man squad by South Australia fast-bowler Kane Richardson. The 21 year-old has been in excellent form for his state and Big Bash League franchise, Adelaide Strikers, this season and is known to possess an effective yorker.
National Selector John Inverarity said, “Kane has been called in as cover in the squad due to his impressive form in the limited-overs formats this season. This provides another great opportunity for a young player as we look to build towards Cricket World Cup in 2015”.
