Rikki Clarke Is New Derbyshire Captain

Derbyshire County Cricket Club has captured the signature of star all-rounder Rikki Clarke and immediately appointed him as Captain.

The 26-year-old all-rounder joined the club from Surrey on a two-year contract having scored 4201 runs and taken 110 wickets in 76 matches at The Oval.

Clarke won the prestigious Cricket Writers Club Young Player of the Year in 2002 and he has since proved the journalists right by maturing into a consistent and explosive performer.

A fine middle-order batsman and handy fast-medium bowler, Clarke averages 38.53 with the bat and 41.68 with the ball in first-class cricket.

He has played two Tests and 20 One Day Internationals for England; his last international appearance coming in September of last year.

Capped by Surrey in 2005, Clarke enjoyed his best season the following summer when he scored 1027 runs at an average of 57.05 and took 22 wickets in First Class cricket.

Derbyshire felt the full force of Clarke’s talents that year as he notched scores of 59 and a match saving 130 against them in the season’s opening match at The Oval.

The new skipper is also no stranger to scoring runs under lights at The County Ground as, in 2002, he guided Surrey to a nail-biting one wicket win with a fine unbeaten 98.

Head of Cricket John Morris said: “I am delighted to have signed a player of Rikki’s quality - he will be a massive addition to our squad.

“The great thing about Rikki is that despite his already fantastic record, he still wants to improve and he quite rightly has ambitions to play for England again in the future.”

Chairman Don Amott said: “It shows how far Derbyshire County Cricket Club has come that we can now attract and afford players of Rikki’s calibre.

“It is little over a year since Rikki was last playing for England and the fact that he chose Derbyshire over several other counties is a real boost ahead of the 2008 season.

“I am sure that our members and supporters are excited by this signing and I hope that they will come out in support of the team when the season begins in April.”
