Saggers Joins Essex On Loan
Essex has signed Martin Saggers on loan from Kent for a one-month period.
The 35-year-old right-arm fast-medium bowler joins the County with immediate effect to bolster the seam attack.
Injuries continue to plague the pace bowling ranks with Maurice Chambers, Andrew McGarry and Mervyn Westfield all likely to miss much of the remainder of the campaign. In addition, Alex Tudor (abdominal strain) and Darren Thomas (shoulder) are continuing to work their way back to fitness in the 2nd XI.
Saggers will therefore provide a boost to the set-up ahead of this week’s LV County Championship match against Northamptonshire at The Ford County Ground (starting on Wednesday).
The former Durham player earned three Test caps for England between 2003-2004, taking seven wickets @ 35.28. His first-class record is hugely impressive with 352 victims @ 24.62 including 83 for Kent in 2002 when he was the joint leading wicket-taker in the English season.
Saggers has also registered excellent figures in the one-day game with 149 wickets @ 26.38.
Essex Chief Executive David East said: "We are delighted that Martin will be joining us on loan from Kent. We have a serious injury problem with our bowlers at the moment. Martin is a very experienced player who will help us significantly in the next few weeks.”
