India have suffered a major setback ahead of next month's One-Day International series against South Africa with dashing opener Virender Sehwag ruled out due to a shoulder injury.
Sehwag, who had nursed a shoulder injury a few months ago, will be replaced by Rohit Sharma in the squad for the five-match series starting on 12th January.
"Virender Sehwag has been advised to withdraw from the ODI series against South Africa to tend to his shoulder. Rohit Sharma will replace him in the squad," an Indian board (BCCI) statement said.
“Murali Vijay will stay back in South Africa for the ODI series, as the 17th playing member of the squad," it added.
The 32-year-old could not take part in the ICC World Twenty20 Championships in April and May due to a similar shoulder problem.
The dangerous opener has played 228 ODIs and amassed 7380 runs at the top of the order which includes 13 centuries.
India is currently playing a three-Test series against the Proteas, which is squared 1-1 after the visitors registered an 87-run win in the second Test in Durban.
The third Test will start on 2nd January in Cape Town.
