Delhi Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag is to undergo shoulder surgery which will rule him out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League.

Sehwag, will fly to London to have the surgery on a long-standing problem and it could rule him out of India's tour of the West Indies in June.

With the Daredevils' chances of progressing to the IPL play-offs remote, he has taken the decision following consultation with the Indian board (BCCI).

He could return to full fitness ahead of India's tour of England and might well have been rested for the trip to the West Indies due to the heavy workload of India's top players.

The Delhi Daredevils have confirmed that Australian all-rounder James Hopes will take over as captain for the remainder of the tournament.

"We will miss Virender Sehwag as he has been the pillar for Daredevils," P Vanchi of GMR Sports, the owners of the Daredevils, told the franchise's official website.

"But we also know how important it is for Sehwag to get the surgery done and be fit for future matches. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he will soon be back in action for both Daredevils and India."

The Daredevils complete their league programme with matches against Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab and Pune Warriors.
