Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik is an injury doubt for the second Test against India, which starts on Friday, after failing to recover from an ankle injury.

He sustained a sprain playing football after the first Test and the early prognosis was positive, with Pakistan team management saying he would be fit after undergoing scans. However, the ankle was still heavily strapped during practice on Wednesday and he took no part in training.

"He's nursing an ankle injury. It will take time," Pakistan manager Talat Ali told reporters. "He'll have a fitness test tomorrow."

Meanwhile, fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar is recovering well from the viral infection that kept him in hospital for one night after the match.

"He has recovered very well," Ali said. "Hopefully he will be at practice tomorrow."

India won the first Test by six wickets in Delhi with the second of three games taking place in Kolkata.
