He suffered the injury taking a diving catch for the Rajasthan Royals during their six-wicket defeat to the Delhi Daredevils, his finger getting, in Smith's own words on his Twitter page, 'hooked in the ground'.

He added: "Gonna miss the royals and india and all the fans! Gonna try get fit for 20/20 world cup with south africa!!"

Meanwhile, captain Shane Warne, also using Twitter, says that English all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas is to return home after suffering an injury.

Mascarenhas left the field after his spell of bowling returned two for 31.
