South Africa have released Johan Botha, JP Duminy and Wayne Parnell from their Test squad ahead of the opening match against India, which begins on 16th December.
The move means that the selectors will now have a 12-man squad to pick from at Centurion Park with pacers Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Ryan McLaren and left-arm spinner Paul Harris presumably competing for one spot in the team.
Meanwhile, captain Graeme Smith has been back in the nets for the first time since fracturing a finger against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.
“I was very pleased with the way it went,” he said. “I am following the same processes I have always followed when coming back from injury. I will step up my batting schedule over the next two days.”
The series sees the two sides occupying positions one and two in the ICC Test rankings clash over three matches with Tests in Durban and Cape Town following the opener at Centurion Park.
