A combination of strong batting from Sri Lanka and persistent rain and bad light ensured that despite the best efforts of Australia, the second Test in Pallekele was drawn.
Sri Lanka ended their second innings on 317 for six when play was finally called off after they had managed to build a lead of 80.
Kumar Sangakkara (69), Mahela Jayawardene (51) and Thilan Samaraweera (43) ensured the home side did enough to prevent Australia's faint victory hopes from materialising.
Ryan Harris finished with three for 54 having dismissed Sangakkara who was caught by Michael Clarke and Prasanna Jayawardene (21) who was caught by Brad Haddin.
Angelo Mathews was unbeaten on 11 and Suraj Randiv on four when the rain, a constant feature throughout the game, returned to take the players from the field for the final time.
Michael Hussey was named as the man of the match for the second game in a row after he scored 142 to set up Australia's 411 for seven declared in reply to Sri Lanka's meagre 174 after they won the toss and batted first.
Australia will take their 1-0 series lead into the final match in Colombo which begins on 16th September.
