The tour was arranged after India cancelled their tour to Pakistan and lost two One Day Internationals against England in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks.

India beat Sri Lanka 3-2 in an ODI series in Sri Lanka last year after Sri Lanka had beaten India to win the Asia Cup in Pakistan.
