Dale Steyn is to explain a failed drugs test after abnormal findings in a sample during this year’s IPL.

The fast bowler was found to have abnormal amounts of morphine in his sample and subsequently failed the doping test. However, Cricket South Africa have said that it is different to a doping violation in that it is an abnormal analytical finding which was brought about by a painkiller that Steyn was taking for chronic migraines.

Steyn kept a written log of what he took during that period and South Africa team doctor Mohammad Moosajee is confident that his explanation will prove satisfactory. He said:

“As soon as the IPL come back to us and tell us they accept he explanation it will not be a problem, this happens all the time with players.”

The substance that was found in his sample, Myprodol, is not a banned substance however there may have been a misunderstanding over the usage of the substance.

“Myprodol may not be called Myprodol where he was playing so they wanted to know why the levels were high.”
