Northern Universities Student Club-Community Cricketers Elite (NUSC) sponsored by Hilton Newcastle Gateshead completed the final session of 2010 of their Winter Training Programme (WTP 2011) on Saturday.

After the snow of the previous two weeks, the students were met by the welcome surprise of sunshine and warm conditions which certainly helped to improve their mood.  It might have been the final session but that simply meant work, more work and hard work faced the players as weather delays meant two weeks work went into one.

The majority of the squad were off into spin masterclasses working on various technique with Gordon, Ronny and Marc while four top order batsmen in the making took on the spinners in another match duel with the added incentive that every wicket meant 10 sprints although we think someone forgot to tell Matthew Brown who went on a whirlwind attacking spree supported by Aaron Proud whose comment summed up their stint “reckon I have scored 20 pal, struggling and just trying to get off strike as Browny is unstoppable in this mood”.  They also got the rare opportunity to watch back their performances on video with the spin coach Ash Patel to discuss what tactics had been employed by the bowlers and coaches against them.

The batsmen’s attacking spree was somewhat halted in the second stint as a little venue trick was unveiled…it always ensures a more lively surface for the seam bowlers who spent a session rotating between match and Kookaburra ball skills lanes under Marc Symington’s watchful eye.

So that is it for 2010.  A year of great transition within the playing squad, some amazing results over Ireland, Scotland and Derbyshire in the summer while a great WTP in progress in the winter as players have really thrown themselves into everything offered.   Have a great break guys, remember to keep up your skills by watching and learning from the Ashes and see you all on January 15th

We would also like to wish all our web watchers around the world a fantastic Christmas and look forward to sharing our 2011 adventures with you.  For exclusive updates on NUSC log onto updates www.cricketworld.com/nusc-ccelite/

In a stunning upset the NUSC cricketers regained the much coveted Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Cricket Championship trophy with a 2 matches to 0 scoreline over their Irish counterparts from Leinster . Unseasonable weather ensured just two of the four scheduled matches were played although this allowed for a rare opportunity for sightseeing, indoor training at Durham CCCs ground and for a training session with the Durham CCC 1st X1 squad prior to their match with Lancashire Lightning in the Twenty20 Cup.
