The charity cricketers at Northern Universities Student Club Community Cricketers Elite had another surprise guest when Durham County’s coach Jon Lewis returned to his old club to provide a fielding masterclass.

Jon, who is fondly known as the “Judge” started his coaching career with NUSC before moving onto a full time role with Durham County’s batsmen in 2007.   He has since been a familiar face in the viewing gallery at sessions working as a scout for Durham County which has brought NUSC members much recognition such as a full contract for Chris Rushworth, academy terms for Matthew Sampson-Barnes and the Hodgson brothers (Mid week Academy).  But on Saturday, he was rolling back the years after generously agreeing to take a fielding masterclass to show the students the standards required at 1st class level.

John D Holland, the clubs Director of Cricket was extremely grateful for Jon Lewis’s support: “It just shows the true character of Jon that he is willing to come back to his first club and provide a free masterclass to help take the squad forward in such a key area of the game.  Jon as ever ran an enjoyable but tough session which shows the standards expected at 1st class level.  Those are now the standards we place onto our squad to produce week in and week out as it could be worth just one run in a match but that can be the difference between a win and a loss”

In a stunning upset the NUSC cricketers regained the much coveted Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Cricket Championship trophy with a 2 matches to 0 scoreline over their Irish counterparts from Leinster . Unseasonable weather ensured just two of the four scheduled matches were played although this allowed for a rare opportunity for sightseeing, indoor training at Durham CCCs ground and for a training session with the Durham CCC 1st X1 squad prior to their match with Lancashire Lightning in the Twenty20 Cup.

Northern Universities Student Club-Community Cricketers Elite (NUSC) sponsored by Hilton Newcastle Gateshead completed the final session of 2010 of their Winter Training Programme (WTP 2011) on Saturday. After the snow of the previous two weeks, the students were met by the welcome surprise of sunshine and warm conditions which certainly helped to improve their mood. It might have been the final session but that simply meant work, more work and hard work faced the players as weather delays meant two weeks work went into one.
