Cricket Australia (CA) have confirmed that fast bowler Ryan Harris is likely to undergo surgery after suffering a stress fracture to his left ankle during the third day's play of the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne.

He was forced to leave the field and a decision on whether he is to return to bat will be made in due course with Australia heading into the final day with four second-innings wickets remaining and still 246 runs behind.

"Ryan Harris developed ankle pain during England's first innings and scans have revealed that he has a stress fracture of his left ankle," CA doctor Trefor James said in a statement.

"Ryan is likely to require surgery and will consult a specialist in the next 24 hours."

He had taken 11 wickets in the series, which was level at 1-1 going into the match at the M.C.G.
