Surrey have announced the signing of Pakistan fast bowler Rao Iftikhar as short-term cover for India's Piyush Chawla, who will miss the start of the season due to Indian Premier League (IPL) commitments.
Leg-spinner Chawla will be part of the Kings XI Punjab squad and in the time that he is in India, Iftikhar will be available for their first three LV County Championship matches.
Iftikhar, who has played one Test, 62 One-Day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals for his country, boasts a first-class bowling average of 23.87 having taken 388 wickets since making his debut in November 1999 for Islamabad in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
He has also represented the Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan, Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited, Rawalpindi, and Federal Areas and although he is yet to play county cricket, he did have a spell in England when he represented Porthill Park in the North Staffordshire & South Cheshire League in 2005.
“Signing someone with the experience and proven wicket taking abilities of Rao Iftikhar will allow us to add a bit of quality to the squad and is very much in line with the signings that we have already made since the end of the 2009 season” Surrey's Professional Cricket Manager Chris Adams told www.britoval.com.
“Along with his impressive stats I believe Rao is the type of bowler who will perform well in English conditions and with Pakistan touring later in the year, he has a terrific opportunity to lay down a marker for selection. He can swing the ball well, has a very repeatable action and consistently bowls in the mid to high eighties. We look forward to his arrival.”
