Surrey To Release Saqlain Mushtaq

Surrey are to release former Pakistan international off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq due to his contract with the Indian Cricket League.

Surrey are preparing to go into the 2009 season with no ICL players, which will enable them to sign an Indian overseas player and earn them eligibility for the Twenty20 Champions League, should they qualify.

Teams with ICL links are currently barred from the tournament and not allowed to sign BCCI-contracted players.

Saqlain is currently playing for the Lahore Badshahs in the ICL.

"We are not prepared to go into next season with an ICL player," Surrey CEO Paul Sheldon said. "Clubs are not being encouraged to be associated with ICL players and it's our policy not to be. We are talking to Saqlain about how we can come to some arrangement because he can't get out of his ICL contract."
