NUSC build up to an exciting six month summer season gained a special boost when Ian Thacker flew in from Australia to take a fielding masterclass with the charity students at their first ‘Ronny Boyd Training Camps’.

Ian Thacker is the ACE Academy Director in Perth, Australia which is twinned with NUSC in the UK.  Ian is also the organiser, arranger, fixer and ‘keeps the show on the road’.  He will only ask of people the things he is prepared to have a go at himself and participates in all the practice and fitness sessions. His enthusiasm ensures everyone is kept on their toes and that they achieve the best they are capable of at all times. Ian has many years of experience working as a cricket coach and admits that the greater part of his own teachings comes from working alongside the ‘worlds best’.

John D Holland Director of Cricket for NUSC added “Ian brought a fresh set of ideas to the fielding drills which took standards through the roof.  I can not praise him enough for how he made the session not only enjoyable, competitive while ensuring the players learnt a huge amount about why Australia have dominated world cricket for so long thanks to their fielding”

Ian commented that “it has been a very special evening working with lots of top players, characters like little Besty, Keany and Yozzer while watching Newcastle FC play in Sunderland will always be memorable.  I just hope the players enjoyed it and they go onto to have fantastic seasons”

Well just 5 days after his visit and despite a rain effected programme, Christopher Youldon on a sponsors invite to the training camp took all the advise to heart almost doubling his career best in making 75* for Sunderland CC to help transform their match against league chasing South Shields.  Lets hope this is a sign of Ian’s impact on the players performances

Thanks again Ian and we look forward to seeing you at the Tri Nations Twenty20 Championship

In a stunning upset the NUSC cricketers regained the much coveted Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Cricket Championship trophy with a 2 matches to 0 scoreline over their Irish counterparts from Leinster . Unseasonable weather ensured just two of the four scheduled matches were played although this allowed for a rare opportunity for sightseeing, indoor training at Durham CCCs ground and for a training session with the Durham CCC 1st X1 squad prior to their match with Lancashire Lightning in the Twenty20 Cup.

Northern Universities Student Club-Community Cricketers Elite (NUSC) sponsored by Hilton Newcastle Gateshead completed the final session of 2010 of their Winter Training Programme (WTP 2011) on Saturday. After the snow of the previous two weeks, the students were met by the welcome surprise of sunshine and warm conditions which certainly helped to improve their mood. It might have been the final session but that simply meant work, more work and hard work faced the players as weather delays meant two weeks work went into one.
