New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Mills suffered a thigh strain during his side's 97-run World Cup win over Canada, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have confirmed.

He left the field during his third over, resulting in Jesse Ryder having to complete the over, and did not return during New Zealand's comprehensive win.

Mills will now be assessed over the next 48 hours before team management will make a judgment on his fitness and further participation in the competition.

The news comes as a further blow as currently sidelined is captain Daniel Vettori, who missed the Canada match with strained knee ligaments but is aiming to return to play Sri Lanka in their final group game.

Brendon McCullum appeared to be struggling with a knee injury but played down the problem following the game, which by winning New Zealand guaranteed their qualification for the quarter-finals.
