England fast bowler Tim Bresnan has been ruled out of England's three-Test series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

He has failed to recover sufficiently from an elbow operation he underwent in November and will now return home to begin a recovery period of around three weeks.

Durham seamer Graham Onions, who was with the squad in the UAE as cover, has now been brought in as a full member of the touring party.

England, the world-leading Test side, will miss Bresnan's ability to generate movement from unresponsive surfaces with both the new and old ball and he had won all ten of the Test matches he had started up until this tour.

He was ruled out of England's three-wicket win over the International Cricket Council Combined Associate and Affiliate XI and had their next game against a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) XI as a target for a comeback.

England play the first Test against Pakistan in Dubai from 17th January and the three-day game against the PCB XI begins on 11th January.
