The Surrey duo of Tom Jewell and Tom Lancefield have penned one-year contract extensions that will see them remain at The Oval until the end of the 2012 season. Both men are products of the county’s Academy and have come through the Surrey age-group system.
Jewell, a right-arm seam bowling all-rounder from Berkshire, played two first-class matches for the Lions in 2011, hitting 61 and taking five for 49 in their early season match against Cambridge University before featuring in an LV= County Championship game against Derbyshire towards the end of the year. He also performed consistently with the ball in Second XI cricket and in the Surrey Championship for Guildford.
“I am very happy to have signed on for another year with Surrey,” said Jewell of his new contract. “Having been at the club for so long, I am keen to continue pressing my case for first-team selection in all forms. After such a fantastic end to our season this year, I very much look forward to being a part of Surrey moving forward in 2012 and beyond.”
Lancefield meanwhile endured a difficult end to the 2011 season as a knee injury blighted his progress after a promising 2010 during which he broke into the Surrey first team. The 21 year-old opening batsman also played against Cambridge University at the beginning of the season before his injury forced him to sit on the sidelines.
The Epson-born left-hander said of his new contract, “I am delighted to be signing on for another year. 2011 was not the best for me with injuries playing a big part throughout the summer. However, now I have had the operation I am really looking forward to getting back to full fitness and really pushing hard next year to get back to first team level and show my true capabilities.”
