Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) may well be on the look out for junior chefs once their new conference and events facility, The Point, opens in June 2010. And where better to look than just across the road at Stretford High School.

The club recently invited key stage 4 food technology students to spend one of their lessons in their kitchens. The students were the first of four groups that will be visiting LCCC over the coming weeks where they will be given an insight into how a commercial kitchen operates.

The visit of the students is part of an association between LCCC and Stretford High School that will lead to further departments and their students visiting the Old Trafford Ground.

The students were shown into the solid walled Gold Marquee, which caters for upto 700+ guests. Head chef Nic Ashurst then informed the students the importance of wearing whites and gave them a health and safety brief before they were allowed to enter the hallowed kitchens, all kitted out in their chef whites.

Once in the kitchens the students (pictured right) were shown an array of equipment including the blast chillers, fridges and combi ovens.

Stretford High School’s Head of Technology Anne Jackson said:

“When the students returned to school they were very enthusiastic about the experience and the next group can’t wait to visit. We are looking forward to furthering our relationship with LCCC as we know it will be beneficial to our students.”

The students finished off their visit by making a dish of scrambled eggs with salmon and garnished with herbs and even a scrambled egg burger. Look out Jamie Oliver you may have competition in the not too distant future!

Once complete, ‘The Point’ will be one of the largest purpose built facilities in the country, providing a venue able to cater for 1,000 for banqueting, or 1,000 delegates for a conference.
