Dane van Niekerk took a hat-trick and returned figures of five for 28 to bowl South Africa Women to an 80-run win over West Indies Women in the first One-Day International in Saint Kitts.

After Trisha Chetty's 57 had helped South Africa reach 206 for eight, van Niekerk ripped through West Indies' batting to dismiss the home side for 126 in reply.

Marizanne Kapp and Susan Benade also took two wickets as the West Indies collapsed from 89 for three to 104 for nine, unable to deal with the threat offered by van Niekerk's spin.

She removed Deandra Dottin (26), Shemaine Campbelle (4), Shaquana Quintyne (0), Anisa Mohammed (0) and Tremayne Smartt (0).

The latter three players were dismissed in consecutive deliveries spread across two overs.

Merissa Aguilleira had earlier top scored with 40 and Kycia Knight battled valiantly before she was finally out for 19, trapped in front by Benade.

It was a fine effort from South Africa, who started and ended the match strongly but allowed the West Indies back into the game in the middle.

Their openers Shandre Fritz (24) and Chetty put on 49 for the first wicket and captain Mignon du Preez then hit 48 but after she was caught and bowled by Stafanie Taylor, South Africa slumped from 150 for three to their closing score of 206 as Shanel Daley and Shaquana Quintyne grabbed a brace of wickets.

However, South Africa then hit back to reduce West Indies to 24 for three and despite the best efforts of Aguilleira and her side, the home team were comprehensively beaten in the end.

The second game in the five-match series is on Wednesday (9th January).
