A hamstring injury has ruled Nashua Cape Cobras all-rounder Vernon Philander out of the three-match ODI series between the Standard Bank South African squad and Bangladesh.

“Vernon has a tear between grade one and grade two,” said selection chief Joubert Strydom on Tuesday. “In layman’s language that means he is ruled out for between 14 and 21 days. It is most unfortunate and disappointing as we were looking forward to giving him another run.

“We have decided not to replace him at this stage and go with the other 13 players as originally selected.”

The five players joining the squad already in Bangladesh left South Africa on Tuesday afternoon and will arrive on the sub-continent in time for Wednesday afternoon’s practice.

The Proteas play a 13-a-side warm-up match on Friday with the ODI series taking place at Chittagong on Sunday and at Dhaka on Wednesday and Friday of next week. All three are day matches.
