Leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed has today been awarded Australian citizenship, which would allow him to represent Australia in the upcoming Ashes series.
He travelled to the British Isles with the 'A' team last month but currently lies behind Nathan Lyon and Ashton Agar in the pecking order ahead of the five-match series.
The 31-year-old took a wicket apiece against Ireland and Gloucestershire in his appearances for Australia 'A', bowling alongside Agar.
Ahmed, who sought refuge in Australia in 2010, says: "It was a tough time for me the last four years here in Australia. But it's worked now and I have an opportunity to prove myself, prove my skills especially in the cricket and hopefully as best citizen of Australia."
