West Indian Daren Powell Joins Hampshire

West Indian fast bowler Daren Powell has agreed to join Hampshire and subject to the deal being ratified by the West Indies Cricket Board, he will be available to play from next week.

Powell, currently in Ireland for a quadrangular series has represented Jamaica and Gauteng in first-class cricket and currently has 22 test and 28 one-day international appearances to his name.

Powell will add depth to the Hampshire bowling reserves, particularly if the likes of Dimitri Mascarenhas and Chris Tremlett are called up to play for England against India, which seems likely given their inclusion in England's provisional Twenty20 World Cup squad.

Paul Terry, Team Manager, was upbeat about the signing:

"We are delighted to sign an international bowler who’s shown some great qualities in the West Indies tour. He’ll add depth and extra fire power to the squad. He’s keen, enthusiastic and willing to come and learn from county cricket, so hopefully it’s set for a win win situation."
