Academy graduate Mark Wood has signed a two-year contract with Durham that will see him remain at the club until the end of the 2013 season.
The 21 year-old, who has been a member of Durham’s prolific Academy since 2007, said of the announcement, “I’ve been a part of the Durham set up for a few years now and it feels great to be making that next step up to the professional squad. I was really pleased to get my chance to play in the Championship this year; I really enjoyed the experience and was glad to have been able to contribute.”
He added, “I’m going to spend the winter in Australia to try and further develop my game before next season; it can’t come soon enough!”
Wood took 11 wickets and scored 124 runs for Durham first eleven in all forms of cricket last season – including a crucial haul of five for 129 against Nottinghamshire – meaning that Durham Head Coach Geoff Cook was more than happy with the news.
“Mark adds a real sense of enthusiasm to the dressing room and we’re delighted to add him to the professional staff,” said Cook.
“He’s come on a lot in the last 12 months and showed in his Championship debut that he can deliver good performances in high pressure situations, which is a great skill to already have under his belt as he continues to mature as a player.”
